Forget traditional surfing holidays. Sword of the Sea takes players somewhere altogether more extraordinary, where vast deserts become oceans, sand dunes move like giant waves and an ancient world is waiting to be brought back to life.

The atmospheric adventure from Giant Squid, the studio behind ABZÛ and The Pathless, is now available on Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, with the Xbox version priced at £24.99.

Surfing Across A Lost World

Sword of the Sea puts players in control of the Wraith, a resurrected wanderer tasked with uncovering an ancient ocean buried beneath a desolate landscape. The journey revolves around the Hoversword, an unusual means of transportation that blends the movement of a surfboard, skateboard and snowboard.

Rather than simply travelling from one location to another, movement becomes a major part of the adventure. Build momentum across enormous waves of sand and water, launch into the air, and pull off flips, spins and grabs using ramps, halfpipes and wall rides. There’s a real sense of freedom to the way the Hoversword moves, balancing high-speed action with more relaxed exploration.

An Ocean Waiting To Be Rediscovered

The world itself is a major attraction. Players will travel through sandy deserts, glacial mountains and ancient ruins, exploring a landscape shaped by enormous shifting waves. Hidden locations and remnants of a lost civilisation provide plenty to discover along the way.

As the Wraith progresses, the environment begins to change. Sandy expanses transform into shimmering emerald waters, bringing magical marine life back into an otherwise lifeless world. It’s a journey of restoration as much as exploration, although the promise of a thriving ocean doesn’t mean every secret beneath the surface is welcoming.

From The Creators Of ABZÛ And Journey

Giant Squid‘s creative director Matt Nava leads the artistic vision, continuing a distinctive style previously seen in ABZÛ and The Pathless, as well as his earlier art direction work on Journey.

The soundtrack comes from the acclaimed Austin Wintory, another familiar name whose music has helped define those previous adventures. Together, the visual design and score aim to make Sword of the Sea an experience where atmosphere and movement are just as important as reaching the next destination.

Time To Ride The Waves

Sword of the Sea offers something a little different from the usual action adventure. Its combination of spectacular environments, expressive movement and a world gradually returning to life gives players plenty of reasons to take their time rather than simply race towards the finish.

Now available on Xbox Series X|S (Xbox Store) and Nintendo Switch 2 (Nintendo eShop), this latest outing from Giant Squid brings another imaginative world to explore. Just remember to enjoy the ride – sometimes the best part of the journey is finding the perfect wave.
