The Broken Sword of St. Mihai is something you'll be on the lookout for rather early on in The Blood of Dawnwalker, especially after being prompted to explore the Svartrau Cathedral and what lies beneath it by the main quest. Or perhaps you stumbled upon part of the sword unknowingly by accident!
Either way, I've put together the below guide which details exactly where to find the Broken Sword of St. Mihai in The Blood of Dawnwalker, so you'll quickly be able to get your hands on one of the best swords in the game.

To find the broken sword – one of the items needed to reforge the Sword of St. Mihai, alongside sword shards – follow the 'A Monk and a Saint' main quest. This first tasks you with finding Albertus in the Middens, which is just west of Svartrau's main city (and shown on the below map).
In this neighbourhood, use Focus Mode and inspect the writings on the walls, then follow them. They'll lead you to a hut covered in writing, where Albertus resides inside.
Tell Albertus the following:
- Ask about St. Mihai's Silver Sword.
- Pick up a piece of charcoal.
- Write 'Abelard the Sorrowful'.
- Write 'Svartrau plaza'.
- Write '...his penance, the place of his redemption.'
- Write '...never once set foot inside it'.
- Write 'St. Mihai, a great warrior, arrived at Vale Sangora'.
After this, you can thank Albertus and leave. You'll then be prompted to pay a visit to Svartrau Cathedral next, which is labeled on the below map. Though, bear in mind you'll only be able to enter the Cathedral during daytime.
When speaking to Father Florin, say 'That's right', then go with him to allow him to take your confession. This uses one segment of time, and you can say what you wish during the confession. In my experience, I said 'about a year ago', 'wrath', and then ended the confession, and all was well.
Next, use Focus Mode and question the townsfolk highlighted orange in the cathedral.
The townsfolk reveal the following:
- Speak to the Deacon, and he'll ask for help finding the caretaker.
- Wait for the Believer to finish praying, and ask her about the crypt. She'll point you in the direction of the treasury.
- Approach the Acolyte next and offer to help him. This gives you access to a small room which contains some loot, as well as a ledger that holds the Treasury Key.
Exit the Cathedral and enter the Cathedral Complex, where there are multiple buildings. Start by going into the Treasury, which you have the key for, and inspect the bookshelf inside. Then, move the bookshelf.
In the following room, you'll find the Golden Chalice and can inspect it, revealing a sigil associated with St. Mihai that you'll want to bear in mind for later. There's also a hatch leading into the basement here, where you can find all kinds of clues. Inspect the altar down here to receive a Stone Key you can inspect next.
Before leaving the Treasury, make sure to loot upstairs too. You'll find more clues to inspect, as well as a Vial of Xanthe's Blood.
When you're ready, exit the Treasury and start tracking the 'help the deacon find the caretaker' objective, which takes you to the nearby almshouse and kicks off the 'A Dubious Gift' side quest.
Ask the nun about the caretaker and offer to help her in exchange for information. This will use one segment of time.
Next, go upstairs and speak with Stefan. Offer to clean his wound, which will take one time segment. If you saved the miller, Mort, earlier in your playthrough, you'll also be able to speak to him and his wife here.
Next, you'll be prompted to investigate the abandoned wing of the almhouse. Here, you should find a bookshelf with scratchmarks beneath it, that you'll then be able to move to reveal a hidden room. This uses up another segment of time.
Go deeper down into the almhouse, following the trail of blood, to come face to face with the Almhouse Monstrosity. You'll need to kill him to continue.
Once he's been defeated, you can loot the Caretaker's Key from his corpse. Turns out this is where the caretaker has disappeared off to…
Return to the deacon and inform him of the caretaker's fate next. This will see two segments of time pass, and he'll finally give you the Library Key. Head there next.
Inside the library, you need to track down the chronicle. Fortunately, it's easily found. Go upstairs in the library and left to find the bookshelf that contains it. For what it's worth, this is the only bookshelf that'll glow orange when using Focus Mode.
Use the pulpit directly beside this bookshelf to inspect the book, which will see one segment of time pass.
Afterwards, you'll be tasked with finding St. Mihai's memorial statue in the courtyard. Here, you'll need to clear and inspect the graves until you find one with a sigil on it that matches St. Mihai's sigil (which was on the bottom of the Golden Chalice earlier and resembles a set of scales).
If you fancy skipping manually working out which memorial is the correct one, the memorial you need is the fourth one along, and to the right of the grave that has the large stone crucifix on it. It's also pictured below.
Coen will open up St. Mihai's grave now, and it's time to head into the crypt below. At the bottom, break the suspicious looking wall with the moaning coming from behind it (shown below).
You'll now find yourself challenged by the corpse of Mihai himself, and if you want to claim his sword, you're going to have to defeat him before continuing further. Good luck!
Once the dawnwalker has been felled, you'll receive the Broken Sword of St. Mihai. Loot the suspicious wall that he originally emerged from to claim the sheath and Mihai's Notes.
Now that you have the Broken Sword of St. Mihai, you can give this and any Sword Shards you've found to the Uriashi Blacksmith. She'll be able to forge them into a working sword for you, but only if you also have all three sword shards in your possession. Afterwards, she'll also prompt you to complete a ritual to imbue the sword with additional power!
For more on this if you're yet to do it, take a look at our Sword Shard locations guide, which also explains how to complete the sword. Otherwise, you're done with tracking down St. Mihai's broken sword for now.
