Spectrum offers free GTA 6 internet upgrade to download massive 212GB game

Spectrum is offering customers a free internet speed upgrade ahead of GTA 6's launch, claiming it will allow players to download Rockstar's massive 212GB game in less than 30 minutes.

With Grand Theft Auto 6 finally launching on November 19, fans are preparing for what could be one of the biggest gaming releases of all time. However, the game's enormous file size has raised concerns about storage space and lengthy downloads.

Now, internet provider Spectrum is stepping in to make things a little easier, at least for eligible customers in the United States.

Spectrum wants customers to play GTA 6 right away with fast internet upgrade

In a November 4 announcement, Spectrum revealed it is introducing a temporary "Gig Speed Lift" that will boost qualifying customers' internet speeds at no additional cost.

"The most anticipated game in the world is almost ready to download, and Spectrum is treating eligible customers to a free Gig Speed Lift, November 9 to 30, that will have them cruising Vice City before the rest of the block finishes downloading. No cost, and no strings attached," they said.

The promotion runs from November 9 through November 30, allowing customers with compatible equipment and eligible plans to activate the upgrade through the My Spectrum app.

Those who qualify will receive speeds of up to 1Gbps, while existing 1 Gig customers in select areas can receive an upgrade to 2Gbps.

Spectrum claims its 1 Gig service will allow players to download GTA 6 in under 30 minutes, although actual download times will depend on connection speeds, network conditions, and console download servers.

"With Spectrum Internet Gig, customers can start playing Grand Theft Auto VI in less than 30 minutes, so game day is for cruising, not downloading," the company said.

The timing couldn't be better, as Rockstar recently moved GTA 6's preload date forward from November 12 to November 10, giving players nine days to download the game before launch.

The speed boost won't grant early access, however, meaning everyone will still have to wait until their regional release time to actually play.

Spectrum says the promotion comes with no hidden fees or permanent changes to customers' plans. Once November 30 arrives, internet speeds will automatically return to their original levels without customers needing to take action.

The offer is another sign of just how enormous GTA 6's launch is expected to be, with recent estimates suggesting Rockstar has already generated more than $750 million in digital preorders.

GTA 6 launches November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
