Developer Giant Squid has announced that Sword of the Sea will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 tomorrow, October 29, 2026. The announcement was made during Nintendo’s Indie World presentation, where a new trailer confirmed the release. The atmospheric surfing adventure will also arrive on Xbox Series X|S on the same day.
Sword of the Sea originally launched on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on August 19, 2025. The game comes from Giant Squid, the studio behind ABZÛ and The Pathless, with creative direction from Matt Nava. Composer Austin Wintory also contributed the soundtrack, continuing his collaboration with the studio.
The adventure follows the Wraith, a resurrected figure who sets out to restore an ancient ocean buried beneath a desolate land. Players travel across deserts, glacial mountains, and ancient ruins using the Hoversword, a supernatural board that combines movement inspired by surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding.
Movement plays a central role in the gameplay, allowing players to build speed across shifting dunes, perform flips and spins, and use ramps, halfpipes, and walls to reach new areas. Exploration also involves finding remnants of a lost civilization and restoring water to barren environments. As players progress, stretches of sand transform into flowing oceans, bringing marine life back to the surrounding areas.
